The main idea behind yoga is simple: mind, body, and spirit are all one and can't be clearly separated. Still, there are many philosophical ideas that help us understand the deeper parts of our bodies, minds, and spirits. To stop seeing ourselves as separate and start seeing the unitive state, we need to study and understand these ideas.

So, a yogi should know how atman and brahman, prakriti and purusha, and the three gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva all work together.

 

The law of karma is one of the most important ideas in yoga philosophy. Karma is what keeps us stuck on the wheel of samsara, which keeps our suffering and the illusion of maya going. Maya is the "illusion or ignorance" that separates our ego from our experience of the universe as a whole.

 

These basic ideas about the world can be hard to understand for people from the West, but they help us get our minds back on track so we can see and feel how everything is connected.

Flexibility is when all of the joints in the body can move as they should. This happens because the nervous system keeps track of how tight and loose the muscles are.


Slowly moving into a good posture and holding it gives the nervous system proprioceptive feedback, which helps it coordinate how the muscles work. Slowly stretching protects the muscle fibers and their tendons from strain, and holding the position builds muscle strength by creating resistance. Increasing muscle strength and flexibility helps keep joints stable, flexible, and safe.


Stimulating the proprioceptive system or massaging the nervous system is but one of yoga’s benefits. Muscles, ligaments, and tendons don't have to work as hard when the body is in the right position. When the body is in the right place, the organ systems work better.


Function is determined by structure. If body cavities are messed up, so are the things inside them. Poor posture causes distortions that change the way tissues in organs connect to each other. This causes the system to stop working properly. The stress caused by the distortion slows circulation throughout the area.


By making you stand up straighter, yoga helps your organs work better by keeping their structures in good shape. Better circulation comes from being in the right position and letting go of tension. The changing internal pressures caused by the different asanas are good for the health of the whole body. This change in pressure makes cell diffusion and osmosis work better.

To say that yoga only affects us on a physical level would be to deny the bigger truth of who we are. But it's the deep effect it has on our bodies that makes it possible for us to experience the depths of our existence.

A study shows that yoga can help people lose weight and keep it off. The latest study was conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington.

15.500 healthy middle-aged men and women took part in the study. This group has trouble losing weight because the number of calories they need goes down and the amount of energy they need to burn calories isn't what it used to be.


Unfortunately, I've learned this the hard way over the past few years, and cutting back on food was the last thing I wanted to do. Even though I do cross-training almost every day, it took me a year to lose 16 pounds.


Back to the study: yoga practice was defined as doing yoga for at least 30 minutes once a week for at least four years. In comparison, this is the bare minimum, and many yoga teachers used to say that this amount of yoga wouldn't do anything.


How times have changed! Yoga has been helping people stay fit for about 5,000 years, and its many health benefits are still a mystery that deserves more research.


Alan R. Kristal, Dr.P.H., who led the study at Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division, said, "Men and women who were normal weight at age 45 and regularly did yoga gained about three fewer pounds than those who didn't do yoga.


Until all the research is in, it's safe to say that adding yoga to your weekly routine and making smart food choices will help you control or lose weight.


Find a yoga teacher who is kind but will also push you to practice more. Taking three to four yoga classes per week will give you amazing results, especially if you have been doing yoga for years.


When compared to many aerobic exercises, yoga has a very low impact and can be done for a long time. Your knees, spine, hips, and shoulders will be grateful to you for keeping them in good shape with yoga. Many of the common ways to work out today don't have as much to brag about as yoga.


Take the time to figure out how hungry you are and what you want to eat. You will see that they are not the same thing. If you like chocolate, it's better to buy a single piece of chocolate than a dozen chocolate donuts. This is not to say that chocolate is okay or that you should give up on it. Instead, it's to say that you should eat it in moderation and not every day.


From what I've said so far, it seems like it's all about identifying, controlling, and balancing. We can't just eat without thinking.


Also, when you feel anxious, your body makes more of the hormone cortisol, which may make you eat more carbohydrates. Carbohydrates raise our serotonin levels temporarily, which makes us feel calm for a short time.
